Google has quietly rolled out its August 2026 spam update, and if your website has been sitting untouched for a while, this is the kind of thing that can quietly cost you new customers without you ever knowing why.

What Google Actually Changed

Google runs these updates periodically to clean up its search results. The target this time is the same as it always is: websites that look like they were built to game the system rather than genuinely help the person searching. That includes pages stuffed with keywords that read like no human wrote them, sites that republish other people's content with minimal effort, and anything that looks like it was put together to rank rather than to be useful.

The practical effect is that some websites that were appearing near the top of Google search results will have dropped. Others, particularly those with straightforward, honest, useful content, may have moved up. Google is not punishing small businesses specifically. But small businesses are often the ones who got cheap SEO work done a few years ago and haven't looked at their website since.

The Risk Nobody Told You About

Here is the uncomfortable truth: a lot of small business websites are sitting on content that was written to impress a search engine, not a customer. That made some sense five years ago. It makes very little sense now, and it actively works against you with updates like this one.

If your website includes blog posts you did not write, pages that repeat the same phrase fifteen times, or walls of text that say nothing a real customer would find useful, you are now more exposed than you were a fortnight ago. You will not get a warning. Your phone just quietly rings less.

Your website is not a billboard. Google now treats it like a conversation, and conversations that go nowhere get ignored.

The flip side is genuinely encouraging. Businesses with clear, plain-English descriptions of what they do, real customer questions answered honestly, and content that reflects how they actually speak to people in real life tend to hold up well through these updates. This is not complicated to get right. It is just easy to put off.

What This Means for Your Enquiries and Revenue

Search traffic is not guaranteed income, but for most local businesses it is a significant source of new enquiries. A drop in your Google ranking does not announce itself. You will not get an email. Your existing customers will keep coming back regardless. But the people searching for a plumber, a physio, a florist, or a printer in your area will simply not find you.

For businesses that rely on local search, even a small ranking drop during a busy season can mean missed bookings and lost revenue that you never get back. The businesses that tend to weather these updates best are the ones treating their website like a genuine tool for their customers, not a box they ticked when they first launched.

What To Do About It

  1. 1.Check your traffic this week. Log into Google Search Console (it is free and takes ten minutes to set up if you have not already). Look at whether your impressions or clicks dropped around mid-August 2026. That tells you if you were affected.
  1. 1.Read your own website out loud. Seriously. If any page sounds like it was written by a machine trying too hard, rewrite it in the way you would explain your service to a customer standing in front of you.
  1. 1.Remove or rewrite thin pages. If you have blog posts or service pages that say very little and were clearly written to stuff in search terms, either delete them or replace them with something genuinely useful. Less is more here.
  1. 1.Get a plain-English content review. Ask someone who does not know your industry to read your homepage and tell you what you do. If they struggle, your website is probably working against you. We offer this as part of our website audits if you want a second opinion.
