How AI is being used to detect and shut down criminal scam networks
Faster scam detection means less fraud risk for your customers and fewer costly disputes landing on your desk.
AI-powered scams are getting more convincing, and your customers are already being targeted. Here is what that means for your business.
The Threat Your Customers Are Walking Into
OpenAI has just confirmed it shut down a scam operation based in Cambodia that was using ChatGPT to run fake investment schemes, romance scams, gambling fraud, and impersonation attacks at scale. This is not a story about Silicon Valley drama. It is a story about organised criminals using sophisticated AI writing tools to sound credible, warm, and trustworthy to ordinary people, including your customers.
The reason this matters to you is simple: when someone gets burned by an AI-assisted scam, their trust in anything digital drops sharply. That includes your website, your emails, your booking forms, and your WhatsApp messages. You will be operating in a climate where your customers are, quite reasonably, suspicious of things that look and sound polished and professional online.
Your Reputation Can Get Caught in the Crossfire
Scammers are increasingly impersonating real businesses. They copy branding, use business names from Google Maps, and write convincingly in the voice of local tradespeople or clinics. If someone in your area receives a fake message pretending to be from a business like yours, promising a deal or asking for a payment, the fallout lands on you even if you did nothing wrong.
We have spoken to small business owners who have had to deal with customers calling in a panic because a fraudster used their company name. It is time-consuming, embarrassing, and occasionally expensive to sort out.
“The scammers are not targeting tech companies. They are impersonating builders, clinics, and local shops because that is where the trust lives.”
Customers Are Becoming More Cautious, Not Less
Here is the practical upside. Customers who are aware of AI scams are starting to verify things more carefully before handing over money or personal details. That is actually good news if your business has a consistent, verifiable digital presence. A proper Google Business profile, a website that loads properly, reviews that look genuine, and contact details that match up across platforms; these all become quiet trust signals that you probably have not thought about recently.
The businesses that lose out are the ones with patchy or outdated online information. If your website has not been updated since 2021, your phone number is wrong on Google, and you have not responded to a review in eight months, you are making it very easy for a customer to wonder whether you are the real business or the scam.
What To Do About It
- 1.Audit your contact details this week. Check that your phone number, address, and email are identical on your website, Google Business profile, and any directory listings. Inconsistency is exactly what makes customers nervous right now.
- 1.Put a face to your business. A short video on your Google profile or social media, even filmed on a phone, does more to establish that you are real than any amount of polished copy. Scammers rarely bother with actual faces.
- 1.Tell your customers what you will never ask for. Add a short line to your email footer or booking confirmation: something like "We will never ask you to pay via bank transfer to a new account without calling you first." It costs nothing and it immediately separates you from fraudulent lookalikes.
- 1.Set up a Google Alert for your business name. It is free, takes two minutes, and means you find out quickly if someone is using your name in a way you have not authorised. Search for "Google Alerts" and follow the instructions; it is genuinely that simple.
The bad news is that AI-assisted fraud is not going away. The good news is that being a real, verifiable, human business is now a genuine competitive advantage. Make sure yours looks the part.
